Taj Mahal

A marble monument of deep love, crown of palaces and a symbol of the best architecture. This marble palace is situated at Agra on the banks of river Yamuna. It was built in 1648 by the Mughal emperor Shahjahan in remembrance of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. About 20,000 workers took more than 20 years to complete this architectural wonder. It is the highest monument in India at a height of 75 metres. The three-storeyed main-gate (darvasa), 100 metres high and 150 metres wide opens to a beautiful garden surrounding the mausoleum. On a huge marble slab of 93.9 sq.m. at a height of 6.6 m., stands the magnificent building. There are four pillars (stupa) each 40 m. high, on four sides of the Taj. The floor is of black and white squares of marbles. A huge dome 24.5 m. high and 17.7 m. diameter crowns the building. The Taj Mahal is regarded as one of the wonders of the world.
